What a character!

Updated: May 27

Hello there!

Funny thing about Character is that we don’t always stop to identify specific character strengths in the people we do life with, but are quick to recognize a deficiency! Just observe the co-worker who doesn’t pull their weight, a family member who’s lazy in their share of housework, a student that is late with assignments and so on. We can, with pinpoint accuracy identify what is lacking.

Just about this time each year, like most families, we had a boatload of summer fun planned and ready to go by end of school year. Those summer days could be awfully long without some planned activities.

Vacation destination...check. Soccer Camps...check.(our children mostly played soccer, besides the year we forced one of the children to run track😂) Summer Craft...check. Character Study...check.

Summers were the perfect opportunity to read and learn something together (at least this was our starry eyed idea of how it would play out!) and we wanted to be intentional with the time together.

The selection for each year’s Character Study actually started mid Winter or earlier if we noticed a trait that was lacking. So, basically it was a year round process!😉

We studied at least fifteen to twenty Character traits over a 25 year period. Not that we skipped years, but several needed repeating.

Our children, all adults now, were recently asked what was learned and you can read their answers. (actual responses are recorded here, but the names have been deleted to protect their identity😉.)

Question: ‘Do you remember studying character traits each summer when you were younger?’ If so, which one stood out and why?

  • The one with the bear. Self Control (each trait had an animal that represented some of the Character qualities being studied)

  • Gentleness. I do remember the traits and Gentleness comes to mind because of the Bible verse; Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Have always tried to display that even in the simplest of forms.

  • Integrity and to always be cognizant of who you are and the decisions you make.

  • Truthfulness, Forgiveness, Hardwork/Diligence and Courage

  • I remember doing the Character traits but don’t remember a specific one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, I suppose the jury is still out, but the goal was then and continues daily, for the people we do life with, to recognize good character in our life choices.

meaningful images and verses on the walls...everywhere!

Proverbs 24:30-34 I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, 31 and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. 32 Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 34 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man

Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, O sluggard,

Observe her ways and be wise,

Which, having no chief,

Officer or ruler,

Prepares her food in the summer

And gathers her provision in the harvest.

Proverbs 30:24

Four things are small on the earth,

But they are exceedingly wise:

Proverbs 30:25

The ants are not a strong people,

But they prepare their food in the summer;
