No exercise better...

”There‘s no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”

John Holmes

This post was written and inspired by our guest and Artist Martha Faller. Find more of her encouraging images on our website.

Two years ago, Martha and I did a Bible Study together on the book of James. Among the countless important applications, there was one that impressed us most of all.

James 1:19-25

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthy ness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

Martha has been a source of inspiration in her example of ‘doing’. She is deliberate and consistent in looking for ways to encourage others!

Lifting up others...

Words of encouragement provide hope when hearts are heavy and in need of compassion. A kind word can be just as refreshing and necessary as a cold drink on a hot day and could make such an impact to a person facing challenges.

As we are out and about, we don’t know the storms people are facing. What they experienced that morning, what they are returning to in the evening or challenging decisions they’re struggling with.

We have opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of people we know and meet.

Consider tucking these ideas in a pocket to pull out when you are out and about.

Even during this time (or perhaps especially during this time with covered faces!) we can be prepared!

  • How is your day going? You might be the only person who shows kindness or interest!

  • Share a kind word. Some people feel invisible and your kindness could be just what they needed to know that they matter to someone.

  • Let someone know the world is a better place because they are in it!

  • LIFE CHANGING WORDS..How are you doing? and then wait for it, really listen and engage with their response.

We have such good intentions and thoughts but sometimes don’t act on those! We can be intentional with lifting each other up. It’s a gift that not only blesses the person who is struggling, but often we come away also blessed having shown love, compassion and hope.

Lifting up others..we can look for opportunities, embrace them and make a difference for someone you know or meet today!

Did you know? There are approximately 50 verses in the Bible that reference “lifting each other up”.

One of Martha’s favorites...

Hebrews 13:2

”Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angles unawares.”
